Every child has a right to an excellent education

For too long, where a child lives or how much their parents earn has determined the quality of their schooling. A Labour government will prioritise our long-neglected schools and education services. Halting the record-breaking Corporation Tax cuts, it will use the money saved to protect the education budget, restating education as a top priority for the nation.

Labour will create hundreds more Sure Start Centres, providing free early years’ education and childcare in our communities. It will bring to an end the Free Schools programme. This wasteful project diverts taxpayer’s money away from state schools, to build expensive schools in areas often in no need of extra school places. This money will be put to better use, with Labour aiming to significantly reduce class sizes for five, six and seven year-olds, as well as repairing school buildings. Under the Conservatives your children are not guaranteed to have a fully qualified teacher in every classroom.  Your child may already experience many classes taken by our wonderful but over-stretched and underpaid classroom assistants. The requirement that all classroom teachers are qualified will be brought back into place.

Every child aged 4 to 11 will receive free school meals. As well as removing the stigma of children unable to pay for their own lunch, evidence-based research has proven that this leads to significantly improved grades.  It will be paid for by ending public subsidies for the 7% of children who go to fee-paying schools.

The proposed Conservative cuts to national education will be over £3 billion by 2020.  Is this what you want for your child?  Look what that could mean in real terms:
